MANILA, Philippines — Tokyo Olympic hopeful Margielyn Didal remained Asia’s skateboard queen as underscored by her winning the Women’s Asia Skater of the Year honors in the first Asia Skates Awards Wednesday night.

It was another feat for the 2018 Asian and 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist bound to make the Tokyo Olympics based on her ranking.

Didal is currently ranked 14th out of the top 20 skateboarders, who will plunge into action in the Tokyo Games set July 23 to Aug. 8.

The 21-year-old Cebu native also took the Styles for Miles and Fastest Feet in the East plums, which won her an extra $300 (P14,500) apart from the $1,500 (P73,000) she is set to receive.

Didal was picked from a 60-woman field from 20-plus countries including another Filipina Cindy Lou Serna, who made it as far as the final seven.

It was an honor that should further boost the confidence of Didal going to Tokyo, joining early entrants Caloy Yulo from gymnastics, EJ Obiena from athletics and Eumir Marcial and Irish Magno from boxing.

“I’m confident, I’ll qualify,” said Didal during the online Philippine Sports Commission Hour last Saturday.

Didal has been training in an indoor track in Cebu since March last year under coach Dani Bautista. She was joined by Serna and Mak Feliciano in training last January.
