MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala, fresh from a three-week respite after a quarterfinal showing in a W25 event in France, clobbered Swiss rival Simona Waltert, 6-1, 6-4, in the opening round of the ITF Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain yesterday.

The 15-year-old Filipina came out strong and dominated Waltert in the opening set then showed tremendous staying power to pull through in a second-set grind.

Overcoming Waltert’s experience and power, the steady Eala hacked out the straight sets win in one hour and 45 minutes to advance to the second round versus the winner between Latvia’s Diana Marcinkevica and Croatia’s Jana Fett.
